How to Apply a Blessing

If you’re coming from a world where stuff just works, even if you can’t be arsed to read directions, this is going to be useful information.

Simply put, if you’ve been given something to draw a positive force—luck, love, financial success—and you apply it wrong, it’s going to do the opposite of bless you. Whatever you’re seeking, you’re about to not experience it. Depending on the abilities of the witch who made it, you may be about to experience not having it real hard.

I think of it like this: if I went to the doctor and was given a prescription for antibiotics, they’re probably pills. If, instead of taking those pills, I administered them to a bookshelf by piling three a day on a shelf, I could not (reasonably) expect to enjoy their effects. If I pay someone to compound me a blessing, applied topically, and I don’t follow directions… well, it’s probably not going to work out well.

The way to apply a blessing is this: starting at your feet, apply the oil, salve, waters, etc, moving slowly toward your head. The direction matters because you’re drawing something to you, not washing it off you. You want to take your time. Pray, visualize, think happy thoughts, whatever draws you into that silent space from which a blessing is best applied.

When you reach your head, if the substance in question is a water/bath, pour it over your head. If it’s an oil, do a quick smear. For salves, you only have to apply it to the skin.

Don’t wipe it off, either. I find it best to apply on the way to bed—for oil-based treatments, it gives them time to sink in. For waters/baths, air dry. Don’t towel off.

Using a blessing can be a soothing part of your day. Doesn’t have to be, but it’s nice to treat the blessing as seriously as it deserves.
