Magic 201: Obsession
The things we can’t stop thinking about can and do powerfully shape our lives, for the most part because we live in our perceptions. What we think to be true informs what we do, and repetition can convince us of truth. What we are obsessed with becomes our truth, whether or not it is true.
The mind is not your friend in magic. Conscious is often merely a stage on which various entities make plays for control. The unwary confuse what they see in the mind with their own ideas, and wonder what in the world might have inspired them to think of things.
Obsession, like daydreaming and “what ifs”, is also a control technology used by various entities to ensure that the energy of a person has a specific focus or direction. Those entities will deliberately suggest the same person, scenario, ideal, idea, etc over and over, because they can use it to control the behavior and “truth” of the person. Obsession produces a consistent type of energy and a consistent focus in behavior.
It will often also have the effect of getting the target into trouble, whether just socially or in terms of legal problems (in the case of particularly strong obsessions.) Obsession characteristically removes the person from interacting directly with reality or what’s in front of them, and often the dominating effect of obsession helps the person feel justified in behaving in dangerous, foolish, or frightening ways—stalking someone, alienating people, letting their lives be ruined, etc.
Obsession is one of the more commonly used tools by those entities. Clearing their influence can be very difficult and requires a priest or spiritual worker of considerable experience.
