Magic 401: Trust and Your Best

Periods of silence are a normal part of the testing and training in the lives of priests, if they are intended to increase their maturity—after all, an adult does not need constant reassurance and instruction. Along with whatever topic is being tested or trained, it is not uncommon for those periods of silence to be an opportunity to train your ability to trust the lwa and yourself, to firm up a foundation of mutual love and trust between you which provides enormous stability and strength.

It is a lot easier to trust the lwa when you realize that your relationship with them and trust in them is founded on the knowledge that whatever their motives might appear to be to you in your discomfort, their actual motivation is your growth, elevation, and healing. If you are their child, you can rely on them to be invested in your growth, elevation, and healing. You might, in your discomfort, project more malicious motives onto them, but those are projections. The projections are a reflection of you—your assumptions, your experiences—not of the lwa.

The projections are what you would do, what a person would do.

The lwa can be relied on to be doing their best for you. This will have limits: you can always abuse their relationship to you and demonstrate a lack of clarity or wholeheartedness that they will reflect at you so you can see what you’re doing. Sometimes, what is best for you is what is most uncomfortable. Sometimes, it’s a FAFO situation and you need to find out.

This does not make the lwa any less powerful. It just means that, because they love you, they’re going to let you experience whatever you need to, to most efficiently learn that lesson.

No matter how it might appear at the time, everything a lwa does (if you are dealing with a lwa) will be bounded by the lesson—whatever it is that needs to be taught. And they are generous, occasionally sending lessons to people who are not their children because the divine is for everyone, even if vodou is not.

Vodouizan can trust, every time, that whatever the lwa are doing, it is intended to promote lessons and their attendant healing, growth, and elevation. The divine and the lwa forget no one, and whether or not you feel them, they are around. You only feel alone.

If you are in a period of silence, let it hold a mirror to you. It is an opportunity to understand the depth and nature of your relationship to your lwa. It is an opportunity to understand, also, how you understand love. Do you need constant interaction and reassurance? Do you assume rejection when that interaction ceases? Do you assume malice in silence, or for that matter do you assume indifference?

Understand, all these things will eventually be resolved. It’s just a lot happier to strive to trust, to understand, even if imperfectly, that the lwa are doing their best for you.

You have nothing to fear. Not from disaster, not from dismay, nor from death or any kind of trouble. You can trust that you are loved.
